22 Health Benefits of Ginger Root & Ginger Tea

Along with its delicious flavor, ginger is one of the healthiest spices in the world. Originally from Asia, ginger has been used for its medicinal purposes for nearly 2,000 years by various cultures. Today, the beneficial spice is making quite a name for itself here in the U.S. and rightfully so. Below is our list of the top 22 health benefits of ginger root.

Prevention & Treatment

1. Fights Cancer

Today, most people are affected by cancer in one way or another. Chances are you know someone who is battling cancer or you may be fighting it yourself. If that’s the case, add ginger into your daily diet. Several studies have found it beneficial in fighting lung, prostate, ovarian, colon, breast, skin, and pancreatic cancers.

According to researchers, ginger’s anti-cancer properties are a result of the compound 6-gingerol, which is found in large amounts in raw ginger. 6-gingerol has anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor activities.

Adding ginger to your diet can help prevent new cancer cells from forming and destroy active ones. It’s also beneficial for people who are already on cancer treatments since ginger has been known to prevent the toxic effects of cancer drugs. In a study with 744 cancer patients, ginger supplementation significantly reduced chemotherapy-induced nausea.

2. Protects Against Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects the central nervous system. It accounts for nearly 60–70 percent of dementia cases in people over 65 years old worldwide. If Alzheimer’s runs in your family or you are worried you may one day suffer from the disease, you should think about incorporating more ginger into your current diet and daily routine.

Research shows ginger can help slow down the loss of brain cells, which typically leads to Alzheimer’s Disease. Additionally, some studies done on animals suggest the antioxidants and other powerful compounds found in ginger can fight inflammatory responses that occur in the brain. Other animal studies show that consuming ginger can protect against age-related decline in brain function.

These findings weren’t only reached in animal studies, though. In one study, researchers gave 60 middle-aged women ginger extract or a placebo. Researchers then evaluated the women’s memory and brain function. They found women who consumed ginger displayed “enhanced working memory.”

Digestion

3. Helps with Irritable Bowel Syndrome

IBS is a common disorder that affects nearly 25-45 million Americans. Some symptoms include cramps, bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation, and mucus in the stool. People who suffer from painful IBS will be happy to hear ginger can offer some relief. That’s because ginger can help relax the intestines during a flair up.

There are several ways you can consume ginger – add ginger root in your cooked dishes, take ginger supplements, or brew ginger tea. The good news is they all seem to have a calming effect on the digestive system.

4. Relieves Gas

Gas can be embarrassing at the wrong times. While there are a wide variety of anti-gas products on the market, it’s always best to try the natural route first. Ginger tea is easy enough to make and has been proven effective at relieving gas. Drink a cup of ginger tea before you go to sleep to let it work its magic overnight while you’re sleeping. It should act to clear out your digestive system and neutralize the problem from inside.

You can make your own ginger tea by adding one two-inch slice of fresh ginger root to two cups of water. On your stove, bring the ginger water to a boil and then let steep for about half an hour.

5. Relieves Heartburn

Heartburn is the main symptom of acid reflux, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a common condition that affects nearly 50 percent of Americans. Today, approximately 20 million Americans are taking an acid inhibiting drug to treat painful heartburn. There’s a problem with that statistic, though. Studies show certain heartburn drugs do more harm than good. Instead of turning to drugs, drink ginger tea.

According to doctors, ginger has been found to have a gastroprotective effect, meaning it prevents the loosening of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) and blocks acid from regurgitating back into the esophagus. It also kills off harmful bacteria, such as helicobacter pylori. This type of bacteria is linked to acid reflux.

For best results, it’s recommended you drink one cup of ginger tea 20 minutes before a meal.

Weight Loss

6. Aids Weight Loss

Losing weight is one of the best things you can do for your overall health. Did you know being overweight can lead to heart attack, stroke, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, and some cancers? To help aid your weight loss efforts, incorporate ginger into your diet.

Ginger is a natural ingredient that’s found in many “fat-burning” supplements. It can speed up the metabolism, leading to calorie-burning. It can also help keep you feeling full for longer, reducing your overall calorie intake.

7. Suppresses Appetite

Ginger may help keep you feeling full, suppressing your appetite and ultimately reducing your daily calorie intake. A 2012 study published in the journal Metabolism found people who drank a hot ginger beverage containing 2 grams of ginger powder after meals reduced feelings of hunger for up to six hours.

8. Helps Manage Blood Sugar Levels

Research out of Australia suggests that ginger can help keep blood glucose levels in check. This is important because these levels have a direct impact on weight loss and weight gain, as well as how energetic or lethargic you feel throughout the day. If you’ve noticed that you’re feeling a mid-day crash it’s likely due to your blood sugar levels. Adding ginger to your lunch might help you stay focused and on task. Think of ginger as an all-natural alternative to products like 5 Hour “Energy.”

What are the health benefits of inserting ginger

    • marty

      Hello Tina!

Well, in my case I drink at least 2-3 times in a day. First intake would be in the morning when you wake up before you eat breakfast. Second, after you finished eating your lunch and Last, would be before you go to sleep. It’s much better to drink ginger tea without lemon. It’s much more effective and in that way you would be able to flush out all of the unnecessary fats from your body. And as I have observed, it really helps out in keeping your stomach full and feeling energized 🙂

Phil here , and I’m just finding out about the affects of”Ginger Root.”
My Wife bought some Ginger Root, but how much Ginger Root do you have to put in, how much water. It doesn’t tell us the directions to make some Ginger Root Tea. I’m PERMANENTLY DISABLED, since 2010, and a lot of my problem comes from ,” Joint Pain”, Arthritis, and Nerve Pain. I also have ,”Terrible Anxiety Attacks”, and ,” Deep Depression Syndrome”. Sometimes my Depression Syndrome is so bad that I can’t even leave my Apartment Building.
If anyone could PLEASE GIVE ME SOME INFORMATION ON,”Ginger Root Tea”, and how to make the Tea.
I need to know how much Ginger Root to use,and the equivalent of how much water to use. Also, I need to know how long to boil the Ginger Root, because I was told that boiling some things takes all of the Nutrients out of whatever you’re boiling.
        Thank You (ANYONE PLEASE HELP),
        Mr. PHILLIP LEET !!!

I learned to make ginger tea in Czech Republic while vacationing. 8 oz. coffee cup – peel & slice several (5 or 6) pieces cut from a single chunk of raw ginger. Drop in cup & Sprinkle a bit of cinnamon, add 1/2 tsp. honey. Pour in boiling water & let steep 3-5 mins. Then enjoy. Cinnamon & honey are flavoring to make it a smooth taste. Ginger is a very strong flavor.

        • Mz. D

I felt compelled to buy ginger root last week and tonight I cut several slices off it and added boiling water to my slices and let it seep. Then I added honey. I found it a bit spicy I may reduce how much ginger I add next time. You know your all making this harder then it has to be. I didn’t even check about its benefits till I started feeling my molecules vibrating.

        • Stephanie

I put water on to boil, wash ginger very well and use peeler back and forth quickly to drop large and juicy pieces in the cup. If I’m having tea; I place the bag in cup, pour boiling water over tea bag and ginger and let it steep covered and then I heat milk, add cardamom, strands of saffron, and sometimes turmeric as well….stir it, while heating to a boil and then remove the tea bag from cup and pour the boiling milk with cardamom, saffron, & turmeric -all done and yum yum 🙂 I chew/eat the pieces at the bottom after drinking tea.
In the morning or at office I will just drink hot water with ginger and lemon juice.
You may want to add a teaspoon of sugar to the milk for tea but not necessary.

        • wayne

I use fresh ginger, so I peel about 100g cut 2to3 mm rings dump all in a pot add about 2 lts cold water bring to boil turn heat off steep for 20 min on hot plate then pour through a tea strainer into a mug add as much lemon juice and a teaspoon of honey DRINK
pour the remainder into a jug, zap in micro before each drink then add lemon and honey I have 1 before each meal. Reduce the honey to taste if you can as sugar in any form is not going to help but the mare lemon juice the better, it’s all about your taste.
          Have a great day
          Wayne

Try taking turmeric herb in capsules. It will help all of your problem at the same time. Look up the benefits of it.

        • Jo

Phil leet, don’t know if anyone answered you. A cup of water, a thumb legnth of peeled ginger, juice of half a fresh lemon…bring to a boil, let steep for about 7 or 8 mins, agg raw honey to your taste and enjoy! Hope you are well!

        • Cynthia Thames

Google how to make ginger root tea. You could also try taking it in capsule form. I generally get my supplements from iherb.com or Swansons.com

        • Velma Mitchell

Although this reply is almost a whole year later, hope you can still find it helpful if you haven’t already rec’d an answer or figured it out. I’m a big fan of ginger and have been for years. Recently decided to up my intake of it for a variety of reasons. You can buy pure ginger tea bags in many supermarkets. You can also buy ginger powder and use one or more teaspoons to make a cupful of tea, depending on how strong you want or can stand it. All the best.

  • Katie

How do you peel it and if bought fresh but not organic how long is the shelf life and does it need to be refrigerated? Thanks

    • zina

The best way to peel ginger is with a tea spoon! you’ll be surprised how well it works out. I keep it out with my tomatoes, but once it starts growing a new green plantlike baby, it starts draining it of fluids, so be sure to use it soon–hope this helps

    • Marissa

Peel it with the edge of a spoon. It does not need to be refrigerated and should last up to two weeks in the cupboard if kept dry.

    • Melody

I’ve learned that using a spoon to scrape and peel ginger is the best way, you don’t waste it using a peeler. Yes ginger needs refrigeration. Ginger, so I’ve been told can last up to a month in a plastic or paper bag in the frig. Freezing ginger is another way to keep it, just break or slice a piece off, then return to storage.

    • Maryann Severson

Do I have to peel the fresh Ginger root that I boil for Ginger tea, and why if I clean it first

      • Live Peachy

        Hi Maryann!

You don’t have to peel it before you make your tea. Just be sure to rinse it well and slice it nice and thin to get the most out of it! This is how I used to make it each morning and I’m still here to type about it.

        Good luck!

      • Yvonne

        Hi MaryAnn,

I rinse my ginger root and then slice it into nice little chunks with the skin still on. I then out it in water and bring it to a nice boil. I then let it cool completely before placing it in a 64oz jug along with the pieces I used to make the tea. I usually get to more 64oz servings with the pieces before tossing them out. I love ginger tea which helps with my arthritis and balances my hormones which is good for pre menopause. Been using it for years now. Enjoy!!! ????????????

    • Patricia

  • linda

I have a question . If I have what my body considers to much ginger I get severe heart burn that can last for 2 or 3 days. Why would this happen if ginger is an acid blocker?

    • CARMEN

Stimulates Appetite – If you have a sluggish digestive system and find that you need to get your digestive fires going before a meal, ginger can help. It may be the case that you don’t produce enough stomach acid, and ginger can act as an appetite stimulant, getting your digestive juices revved up so that you are able to digest your meal better. Improper digestion of foods leaves them fermenting in your digestive tract, and can contribute to weight gain.

YOU MIGHT BE MAKING TOO MUCH ACID.

  • joseps

For the last 15 years I grate 16 oz of ginger roots, add 22 cups of water, boil for 5 minutes and simmer for 19 minutes. Let cool and store the liquid in plastic pitcher and store in the refrigerator. Every morning I pour the ginger tea in my tall coffee cup, heat it in the microwave for 2 minute, add splenda sweetener and that’s my morning drink. I average 2 cups a day. I buy ginger roots from Asian grocery stores 4 to 6 lbs of ginger roots and store them in the freezer. I just grate 16 to 24 oz of ginger for my daily drink. I normally use artificial sugar. My favorite is splenda. The ginger roots cost $1.80 per lb average. I am a senior retired for 17 yrs already. This is a drink in my home town where I grow up. It has prevented me from having dizziness. And I enjoy the ginger . My wife loves it too. joseps

Actually if your stressing at your job, this may help you block unwanted drama. its relaxing… I use traditional medicinal tea bags.

i had bad acid reflux and would wake up jn the middle of the night with severe stomach ache and since i started drinking ginger tea with honey it went away .. i has tried everything drom tums maalox to prescription drug but ginger was the absolute relief

    • Dave E.

cathy, I had full blown GERD, for years, I had narrowing of the esophagus, horrible heart burn, and many times vomiting when things would get stuck, it would also bring up handfuls of mucus. my only relief where over the counter meds, tums, rolaids at every meal and snack. I began drinking milk from a local provider here in Pittsburgh, Pa. (Shneiders Dairy, called Happy Milk, it had good bacteria in it, and it started the right colony of bacteria in my stomach, I no longer drink that milk because it seemed to go bad but it’s benefits have lasted for years and I no longer have ANY symptoms, no heart burn at all, it’s been years since I bought tums and I can eat what ever I want, spicy Mexican, Indian, meat, chocolate, what ever, I never have a problem, I’m 65 years old.

  • Peace onyekwelu

How can i prepare ginger root for drinking so that it will not spoil

    • Patience

My stomach is very acidic so I burp uncontrollably. Once a week, I purify a large amount of ginger that lasts for minimum a week otherwise it will spoil even in the fridge. 3 times daily I add a teaspoon to hot water and that reduces my burping.

      • Dave E.

Patience, I think you mean puree, like with a blender. That is a great idea, that way you get the fiber that most people get only by cooking, which usually reduces the value of any type of food. I’m going to try it too.

  • bing

I doubt it. You need to eat more nuts, coconut oil, avocados, safflower oil etc…. Eat more protein like eggs etc… I cook my eggs in a blend of coconut, avocado and safflower oil. I used to use olive oil and still do when I’m out of the other.

I’m taking aloe vera juice to cure stomach ulcers. will ginger tea help?

    • Dave E.

There is a guy called Jay Kordich that used to go by the name of “The Juice Man”, he had a set of tapes that I bought years ago, he mentioned that they had done a test on prisoners that had ulcers using cabbage juice, I’m not sure how often they drank a glass of it, but it had to be taken within a minute of making it or it lost it’s nutritive advantage, almost all of them where healed within a short period of time.

    • AK

      Answer to Ray,
Ive recently made an essay on something called paradigm shift, and to my amazment and to the good news for you dear Ray, i have
discovered that ulcer is not due nor to stress nor to any type of food but due to a bacteria called helicobacteri or something similar, and the two australian scientists behind that BREAKTHROUGH won a NOBEL PRIZE in physiology after 21 years of their discovery untill the scientist community finally couldnt hide the truth no more, so dear Ray, please know that ulcer will be totally cured with an anti bacterial medicine, ur nightmare is over! Just consult a doc with appropriate knowledge cos there are from the other kind, i tested my doc, asking him doc i have a quizz 4u, do u know what causes ulcer? He passed it, instantly replied a bacteria called helicobacteri, and he s our family doctor since: ), as a wise man said, the only sin is the uncounsciousness. I wont be hoping cos i know u‘ll get well sooner than u hope. TC

I put ginger and lemon through my juicer. Add a tablespoon of each to 8 ounces of water (or increase the water, according to taste). I drink at least 32 ounces of this concoction throughout the day. My life has changed due to the amount of energy this has given me. It decreases my appetite as well. I call it my happy juice. I want to sing it from the mountain tops!!!

  • some

hi all, as some of you might feel its tralxing and soothinh to consume ginger tea before sleep, kindly note from the Chinese medicine perspective, ginger is best taken in the early part of the day, as it has the effect of expelling “wind” from the body, and might be too “cooling” for the body if taken at night…

Good morning ; does ginger help to prevent migraines or just is a pain killer. What is the dose I have severe migraines 15 days a month and im open to try .
    thanks

  • william eagleton

I drink ginger tea at any time. I have a plug in tea kettle. I will cut an inch of ginger off and chop it up into thin pieces. I let the water boil then turn off the tea kettle. Once the water stops bubbling I add the ginger and some kind of green tea. After it cools for an hour or so I mix my water bottles with the ginger/green tea and add a little aloe vera juice and some pomegranate ice cubes. I leave the tea and ginger in the kettle and then the next day add more. After three to four days I then clean out the kettle and start over. I swear by this drink from keeping me healthy and avoiding any real viruses etc….. Letting the ginger sit in the container over night has not harmed me and it doesn’t seem to go bad. I will also drink it straight without adding anything to it. When I don’t have pomegranate ice cubes i’ll use lemon cubes or something else.

Really enjoyed all the comments about the health benefits of ginger today! Thank you! A guy at Food Lion said he drinks ginger tea all the time and he “swears by it”. Well, I won’t ‘swear by it’, but I did buy some and have made the tea today! I bought a hand full of the root, and after reading through some posts online, peeled, and boiled half for about 20 mins. on low – then into a teapot with a strainer! Instead of tossing out the boiled ginger, I just added the rest of it, and water (I used well water ~ ran out of my bottled water), and boiled that for 20 mins. on low. With a little raw honey, it tasted great! I’ll let y’all know if I notice any difference (generally)! If I do, I will offer it to my husband (with Fybromyalsia)! : )

  • Betty

wow im impressed is like i have met my healing process

I was diagnosed with prostatitis, and one of the symptoms is frequent urination, I was just trying different teas for health, not for this problem, and I noticed after a couple of days that I had a normal stream instead of just a dribble and I didn’t have to go every 20 minutes, instead it became more normal and also didn’t have to get up numerous times during the night and slept better. When I stop drinking the tea I have problems again but when I drink it, it is great and relieving.

i have osteoarthritis, sciatica, and osteoperosis, when they hit, it’s miserable, everything swells up, and the pain is unbearable , I don’t like prescription drugs, so I get by on aspirins, which I don’t like taking either, this will probably last a few days to a week. I also have celiac and hypothyroid disease. So I was thrilled finding this site with all the positive comments. First thing in the a.m. I will be shopping for fresh ginger. Meanwhile, I made a cup of green tea with a tspn of ground ginger. I hope I’m as lucky as all those reviewers, and that it works for me. Will keep you posted of the results. Thank you!

    • Catherine M Forsey

  • Jim

how much ginger root should I cut per pint of boiled water for two drinks per day

  • Diane

Does it have to be fresh ginger root or can you use the ginger from the spice rack aisle and get the same results?

    • Mike

Hey Diane, I’ve been using ginger spice now for many years from the spice rack because a friend recommended it for acid reflex. It’s very convenient especially late at night when I get home from work and feel like having pasta with tomato sauce. I simply just shake a slight amount, approx. 1/8 of a teaspoon into a glass and add a little water and drink it down while preparing my meal. I’ve never had acid reflex again. I can attest it works for that. Hope this helps and good luck. (also it doesn’t need any refrigeration) Ocean State Job Lot sells a good size shaker of ginger for approx. $1.00

  • Joseph

After reading all the feedbacks I learned that ginger helps a lot .I will start drinking ginger tea now as an alernative everytime I crave for smoke. Thanks guys.. Godbless.

My wife puts a few sticks of Cinnamon and a small handful of dates with the thinly sliced ginger root to boil. She then pours it over a healthy spoonful of Linden white honey into the cup – amazing. We can usually get a few good sessions out of each pot before it gets too weak.

I love making fresh grated hot chocolate and adding ginger. It makes for a spicy hot chocolate that is delicious!

  • Byron

I make ginger syrup from the root (slow boiled for 90 minutes) and when I use it as a hot tea, it definitely makes me sleepy. What I am talking about is a large dosage of ginger not the store bought powdered tea. It is best for me to have my ginger tea in the evening because having it at lunch makes me want to nap…

  • CJ

I use the ground ginger from my spice rack to make the ginger tea. It’s very easy to just mix it with hot water, add honey or stevia. It actually lessoned some anxiety I was having and calmed me.

  • Quentin

I’ve read the amazing benefits of ginger and no one has mentioned ginger beer. My wife wanted to try making a moscow mules (vodka & ginger beer with lime juice). I started drinking the ginger beer as a refreshment instead of pop. I can feel the benefit after a week, not sure how much ginger is brewed into this drink and you do get extra sugar but it taste great . I will try to make some ginger tea. Cheers to our good health all you ginger users.

YES, GINGER TEA DOES MAKE YOU SLEEPY (sedative effect)!!! I just started drinking ginger tea for the past 2 weeks. It has made me extremely sleepy & lethargic, like Oxycontin, and i could only stand 1/2 pill before it knocked me out! My guess is that like any detox, it is ridding my body of toxins. YES! It is a diuretic. YES! It improves circulation. YES! It is an aphrodisiac. YES! Relieves gas (shrinking a bloated belly). YES! Helps the body absorb nutrients better – seen a remarkable improvement in thickness of nails and hair, which are signs of good health. I did not change my diet. I drank plenty of H20. I did not, however, have the same energy level to exercise as before drinking 2-3 cups of ginger tea using freshly cut ginger. Thus, I am forced to scale back to one cup per day, limiting it to evenings at least until my body is fully detoxed. Best, Karen

I love ginger, I drink it religiously morning in warm water with lemon and raw organic local honey, then before bed just ginger and warm water. It has rid me of my foot spur, lost weight, I have very little heartburn now, get rid of my inflammation around my waist and puffiness around my eyes, my kids upset stomachs, my husbands knee problems and more. The honey has help and almost rid of my allergies.

I use fresh ginger and I peel it then put it through the juicer and fill a glass jar and store in refrigerator, so I can use use it easily. I use 2 teaspoon full into warm cup of water. I just figured that they say boiling water could kill the nutrient in the ginger. I love it.
