36 Super Foods That Burn Fat & Help You Lose Weight

This Evidence Based article was written by

When you see the words “fat burning foods” are you a bit skeptical? I mean, it’s pretty hard to believe that putting more calories, fats, and carbs into your body could actually lead to weight loss. But there are some health foods that have a very high thermogenic effect and can burn calories as you digest them. There are also foods that boost the metabolism and trigger hormones that fight fat. So grab your fork and dig into these 36 fat burning foods that help you ditch those pesky pounds!

fat burning foods feature

1) Tomatoes

Is it a fruit? Is it a vegetable? Who cares? All you need to know is that it’s got a ton of good things for your body to help you burn fat and lose weight! A team of Japanese researchers discovered a powerful fat-blasting compound in tomatoes called 9-oxo-ODA. Other studies have found the beta-carotene and lycopene in tomatoes benefit fat loss. Researchers found people who eat beta-carotene and lycopene-rich diets have smaller waists and lower belly fat.

Additionally, tomatoes are low-calorie, low-fat, and rich in fiber! Like any bona fide superfood, tomatoes bring more to the table than just weight loss. They contain antioxidants that ward off various diseases and illnesses. So next time you go food shopping, be sure to add tomatoes to your cart.

2) Grapefruit

Grapefruit doesn’t tend to make it onto many people’s shopping lists, but it should. In regards to weight loss, the long-standing myth that grapefruit promotes weight loss is turning out to be true. In one study published in the journal Metabolism, researchers found participants who ate grapefruit for six weeks lost a full inch off their waistlines. In a separate study with 91 obese individuals, researchers found participants who ate half a fresh grapefruit before meals lost 3.5 pounds over a 12 week period. There are numerous other studies that have reached these same findings.

Along with activating fat burning hormones, grapefruits have been shown to keep people feeling full and suppressing appetite. If you don’t have time to eat a whole grapefruit, you can always make fresh grapefruit juice and take it on-the-go!

3) Spices

There’s no need to eat bland and boring food when you’re trying to lose weight. This is a great time to experiment with seasonings from different cultures. Many of them have thermogenic properties that boost metabolism while simultaneously making some so-so dishes taste like they’re from a restaurant.

Some examples: Mustard seed will spice up your entree as well as rev your metabolism, ginger can help with your digestion, ginseng can boost your energy, and black pepper can help burn calories. Then there’s the yellow magic spice turmeric. If you like Indian food then chances are you will like turmeric. Along with a delicious flavor, turmeric can help break up fat.

4) Hot Peppers

If you like your food hot then I’ve got some great news for you! Hot peppers like habaneros, jalapenos, and chipotles can actually help you to lose weight while also adding a kick to food. That’s because they contain capsaicin, which provides several benefits that relate to losing weight. One of the main benefits of capsaicin is its ability to convert food into energy, which speeds up abdominal fat loss.

If you’re worried that eating such hot peppers can somehow burn a hole in your stomach, recent research shows they may actually help to prevent stomach problems, like ulcers, by killing the bad bacteria responsible. So fire away!

5) Cinnamon

Don’t underestimate the power of cinnamon … it’s not just for baking anymore. You can get weight loss benefits simply by adding more cinnamon to your diet. Just consuming a teaspoon a day is showing positive results. What causes the magic? It’s the way that cinnamon helps to regulate your blood glucose levels. These levels play a major part in how you feel throughout the day — how energetic you are or how sluggish you feel. Maintaining good blood sugar levels can also help you crush cravings. Just make sure that you’re not counting that cinnamon on your cinnamon roll!

6) Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar

Acidic foods can increase the rate at which your body burns up carbs. They can also give your metabolism a good boost, which can lead to weight loss. Apple cider vinegar is no exception. The enzymes found in apple cider vinegar help digest food and regulate blood sugar levels. As I mentioned above, this can help crush food cravings.

Aside from adding apple cider vinegar to a salad, you can also simply add a spoonful to a glass of water and drink the mixture about 30 minutes before eating. When it comes to what brand of apple cider vinegar you use, though, don’t judge a book by its cover. Rather than using a crystal clear vinegar, you’ll want to use one that looks murky and has a cobweb-like substance floating in it. This is actually desired. It’s called the “mother,” which means it still contains beneficial compounds (including beneficial probiotics).

7) Apples

Apples are often viewed as the ultimate health food and rightfully so. They offer the body many health benefits, including weight loss. That’s partly because apples are high in pectin, which binds with water and limits the amount of fat your cells can absorb. Additionally, apples are high in fiber, which makes you feel full for longer. Just be sure to chew your apple really well before swallowing and go organic so you can leave the peel on! Did you know the peel is loaded with beneficial nutrients?

8) Pears

Pears often get overlooked as the long lost cousin to apples, but they too offer a host of benefits, including weight loss. Just like with apples, pears contain pectin and are rich in fiber, which helps beat mid-morning or afternoon snacking. If you don’t keep pears in your house, then it’s time to start. You can eat them plain as a snack or you can cook with them!

P.S. Take a look at the 5 veggies that boost female metabolism and burn off lower belly fat.

I really liked this list until I read “organic lean meats” with this description, “With conventional meets they’re pumping the cows, pigs, and other animals full of so many antibiotics and growth hormones which ends up in the meat you’re eating.” I don’t know who the “they’re” you are referring to, but I know that farmers and ranchers give the recommended amounts of antibiotics their livestock needs to stay healthy. Also, those antibiotics are out of the livestock’s system long before it reaches the consumer’s plate. How do I know this? I live on a livestock farm and we raise cattle for beef. Are cattle are very well taken care of because it is my family’s livelihood. And we make sure that we do our part in providing consumers with healthy, affordable meat. Please get all your facts straight before you publish something like this.

    • Leah

Thanks for your perspective Sarah, I didn’t realize how overstated the meat biotics issue was. And as a reminder to everyone, remember to pair these foods this with an actual weight loss plan for lasting results. You must approach your weight loss as a combination of habits that promote an overall healthy LIFESTYLE. That’s the “secret” to weight loss strategies that actually work. In fact, check out the following article that does a wonderful job of explaining the key factors in an effective, long-term weight loss strategy: fatfreeme.net/big5

    • Shari C

No animal or human needs any amount of antibiotics unless they have an infection caused by some types of bacteria, though I understand antibiotics are also sometimes used to prevent an infection in case of an injury. To routinely give livestock antibiotics would seem necessary only if they are living in a diseased, unhealthy environment in which they would be perpetually suffering from infections if not on antibiotics. If that’s the case, rather than using a pill to try to solve the problem, it would seem a focus should be on maintaining conditions that prevent infections. And what is the basis for stating the antibiotics are out of the animals’ systems before they reach the consumers plate? If an animal has lived it’s entire life on antibiotics and added hormones, the animal is naturally not of the same chemical composition as an animal that has been raised without those additives.

    • Adam

yeah those anitibotics might be “out of the animals system long before it reaches the conumers plate” but for something to be considered oganic it has to NEVER have been in the animals system. You might have taken a pill when you were a baby so I’m betting all that medicine is out of your system by now. Organic means a food and meat grown or raised without chemicals or pesticides. Those animals were not grown without putting chemicals into their bodies. There are farmers and ranchers that dont give their animals ANY antibiotics or put ANY pesiticides on their crops. Things you buy in the organic section at grocery stores or food served at places like Chipotle THAT is what is considered “organic”. Not people who give the “recommended amount to stay healthy”.

    • Kathy

well Sarah , without knowing whether you send your cattle to feedlots I can’t know whether your meat is really made as healthy to the consumer as you claim. We used to have a family farm and our cattle rarely needed any vet care or antibiotics. The feedlots many ranchers send their cattle to are just disgusting with animals standing around in their own excrement and such. This is not in anyone’s best interest.

    • Belle

Sarah, your family might very well use the “correct” amount of “drugs” allowed to be used, but how can you say they are taken care of. You’re going to slaughter them! I’ve seen the inside of slaughter houses and most farming these days is factory farming. There maybe some small farmers left, but they are NOT the majority. I know what they put in the meats and that’s one of the reasons I don’t eat meat.

    • Levi Page

I believe that is why they specified organic, because legally for a meat to be considered organic no antibiotics of any kind can be used. That is why it made the list.

      • N.D.

So what you are saying then is that to be organic you are legally allowed to let your livestock suffer unnecessarily through an infection instead of administering proper veterinary care and appropriate medication. I would have thought that would bring charges of animal neglect ! I’d rather not eat organic then thank you.

  • judy

Thanks these information are really appreciated. I will be including these foods to my diet, will also be sharing it.

    • Ashley

I can definitely vouch for apple cider vinegar, it really is amazing stuff. Not only does it suppress my appetite but it makes my skin look and feel so much better. You just have to make sure it’s the organic liquid, not the capsules. It tastes pretty disgusting on it’s own, so I throw it in my smoothies and I can’t even taste it. By the way if you’re trying to get rid of fat quickly, I highly recommend the 10 day smoothie cleanse. It’s my go-to cleanse to lose weight. With the right foods, weight loss isn’t that difficult. Foods high in fibre will keep you full for longer and you’re less likely to snack.

I like the information, but I don’t think my ancestors were apes, thank you very much. No one has ever been able to prove Darwin’s theory. It’s just a theory. Stick to what you know.

    • Darwins

well they were so eat a banana and deal with it

    • Anna Jones

I don’t think you have the authority to say what is and isn’t. Let the author writes whatever they want especially since this belongs in the realm of medicine which is science. And that of which is clearly not in your knowledge community

    • Chris

You have got to be joking? There is so much evidence for Darwinian evolution that to deny it is simply absurd and illogical. I think you might like to look into what a ‘scientific theory’ actually is. The term is not used in the same way non-science-folk like myself would use it. In order to become a scientific theory an idea must be supported by evidence, and substantial amounts of it; then it is peer reviewed i.e. other scientists essentially attempt to disprove it. If they cannot it then becomes a scientific theory. Take a look; http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn23376-our-closest-apelike-ancestor-went-back-to-the-trees.html#.VL-x4tKsUl8

Evolution is the emperors new cloths syndrome. Explain where energy and matter came from…before the big bang. Are you saying energy and matter always existed??? If matter and energy always existed then how would you explain the half life of uranium…there would be none. So to say matter and energy always existed is going against all science. So you are at a crossroads…really you need faith to believe matter and energy always existed because that flies in the face of proven science. Evolutionists always start at some convenient time period but will never explain how energy and matter always have existed. So the foundation of evolution is based on a false premise. So if you are familiar with the story of the emperors new clothes… evolution fits right in. Only the fools were able to “see” the clothes…only the fool can believe in something that has no scientific foundation…actually based on scientific theory evolution is the perfect disprovable theory due to the simple question that scientists will not answer..of where did matter and energy originate. Go back to real science and come up with something that follows the facts.
Again…did matter and energy always exist?

        • Just a guy

Faith is for people who fear death. This is an article about food not creationism. Science hasn’t discovered the origin of matter just as the bible doesn’t explain the true origin of “God” I mean, to say science is unfounded is ridiculous because the bible was written by men. After Jesus died no less, at a time when a goat’s shart could be conveyed as black magic. There’s one thing history tells us: humans are self serving assholes each with their own agendas and they happen to write books sometimes. Sometimes it’s science. Sometimes it’s the “new” testament (really?!) and sometimes it’s the “twilight” saga. Either way it’s all shit. Eat food. Survive. Die. Help other people along the way if you can. That’s all that matters. Oh and pull the stick out of your ass this is a goddamn blog about super foods for chrissake. We should be discussing food. I hate humans. Quinoa rocks my flippin socks.

          • Adam

Man I love smart humans. You, sir are a rare find. Cheers.

          • Just another guy

As long as you’re going to lecture people on what’s correct, Just a guy, let me make it clear that the correct response would have been none. “We should be talking about food,” you said, in conclusion to the most self-assured anti-religion rant (but specifically Christianity, mind you… what have you got morally against Christianity? It’s not been proven, but there’s plenty of evidence if you’d take the time to stop roasting it and think for a second) I’ve ever seen or heard anywhere. If you’re going to call religion “all shit” and then tell us all what we’re supposed to do now that you’ve rocked our worlds as we grovel at your feet– talk about a self serving asshole concerned only with his own agenda– consider the circumstance. People were arguing about whether or not evolution exists. First of all, evolution exists. It does. And if one day we were to find out it doesn’t I’d be less shocked if I spontaneously exploded on the spot. But I don’t see that ANYWHERE in your argument. You took one argument and turned it into another just so you could show people how much SMARTER you are than everyone else. This comment is too long already, so let me close by saying: if you’re truly so smart, try to take comfort in your self-confidence and use it elsewhere instead of fighting meaninglessly in the comments of a blog about health foods.

Thanks for the info. Excited to incorporate more of these into my diet.

  • IME

This list reflects everything I eat … if it really worked I would have been a skinny gal … but I’m not ;( what am I doing wrong?

    • Andy

Watch the size of the portions! 🙂

    • mshellt

It might be easiest to just limit the amount of high glycemic foods you eat. (It’s easier to research anyway) Most of the foods on the list are fairly low glycemic, but if you eat them along with a high glycemic food (foods that convert quickly to sugar) the effect is sort of cancelled out. Sweet potatos are lower glycemic than white potatos. Brown rice is lower than white rice. Strawberries are lower than oranges. Just replace all high glycemic foods with lower ones and up the coconut oil (that stuff is an amazing fat-burner!! I’ve tried it and lost 10 pounds in a month without being very physically active) Parsley is another “magic” food, but the easy way to look at it is most of the really low glycemic foods don’t add to weight gain on their own and they also happen to make the list on this page as “fat burning” foods.

  • sherry

I am 54 and trying to lose belly fat..thanks for all the info I’m in my way to a slimmer healthier me!

Egg whites, apple and banana are great source of fiber and energy. Actually it’s the combination of recipes of these list you shared to us that I’m eating every day. I’m ready to be in the best shape and would dedicate my time to only eat the right foods that you shared here. Thanks.

  • Matthew Gates

Thank you for sharing this list. It is by far the most extensive, promising, truthful, and helpful list anyone could have ever shared. The magic to weight loss is not in any supplement or prescription drug, it is in the foods we eat. If everyone stuck to this and dedicated themselves for at least 6 months eating only these foods, they would not only feel healthier, but they would lose weight like crazy. Coconut Water, Coconut Oil, and Dark Chocolate could be added to the list for added benefits.

  • Unmesh

Thanks for your valuable information. I will include this to my diet plan for Fat loss.

  • debra

I read in a consumer mag, they tested organic food and everyday foods from supermarkets for goodness, and the difference was the price, one does not hold on percentage any more goodness than the other. The consumer mag is a NZ group who work for the NZ consumer making sure that NZ er’s have informed choices. They can also inform you on your rights as a consumer and can also take legal action against companies in support of the consumer, they do not set out to discredit they set out to inform.

  • Rachel

I ate like that for a month and lousy 5 lbs but it’s the holidays so I’m back to normal eating for the time being. But I’m going to try flax seed. Thanks.

  • Lucy8a

Can’t believe they’re still pushing egg whites over the whole egg. The yolks are so nutrient dense. What a waste. But we can thank Big Pharma and the medical industry for once again pushing their own agenda on sheeple.

  • BruceandSonja Hadfield

This post is great. Very informative. Thank you :-).

I’d like to make a small input when it comes to Spices..(if I may).
Spices are low cal, low fat, ancient superfoods (most overlooked) known to rev up our metabolism..so we can burn even more calories without lifting a finger. Needless to mention the taste.

5 must-stock ancient spices for weight loss:

    1. Mustard Seed: Boosts metabolism
even after upto 25 hrs of consumption.
    2. Black Pepper: Helps in faster digestion
    and nutrient absorption.
    3. Ginger: Hinders cholesterol absorption.
    4. Cinnamon: Helps in better processing
    of carbs.
    5. Cayenne Pepper: Burns fat. Period.

While your valuable readers are researching on this, it’s also worthwhile for them to check some additional done for them information on:

Have you lost weight with smoothies?

Smoothies are a great tool for weight loss because you control the ingredients. They make perfect vehicles for relatively low-calorie, yet nutrient-laden ingredients that are capable of keeping you full for a long time.

By combining the right ingredients, you can create smoothies that taste great and help you drop pounds. It doesn’t take long to learn what to use and how to make the right combinations. Here’s an idea for weight loss smoothies to get you started

    Mango Avocado Green Tea Smoothie

    1 cup green tea

1 cup fresh or frozen mango chunks

    1/2 medium avocado

    1 cup spinach

    1/2 tablespoon coconut oil

    A dash of sea salt

A little honey, maple syrup, or stevia to sweeten (optional, mango provides enough sweet for me)
