13 Things You Need to Know About the Master Cleanse

This Evidence Based article was written by

13 Things You Need to Know About the Master Cleanse- a must-read for anyone thinking of trying the master cleanse (lemonade diet) detox.
If you’ve been contemplating trying the Master Cleanse there are a few things you should keep in mind before taking the plunge. It’s been around for quite some time, and it has a feels like equal parts internet rumor and a legit cleanse. Much of it largely depends on making up your own mind on whether it’s something that will do your body good, so we’ve compiled a list of tidbits and facts to mull over before starting.

1. There’s nothing really “masterful” about it.
While it may have a powerful name, there’s really not much to this cleanse that would suggest it’s mastering anything in regards to your body. The core of the cleanse is as simple as drinking a lemon concoction and fasting for a length of time. But to hear people talk about it you’d think they’d just found the Fountain of Youth or something equally miraculous. It’s best not to get your hopes and expectations sky high before trying this, and keep a level head throughout the process.

2. There’s a book on it.
While it may not seem like the Master Cleanse is official, it actually stems from a book that was written over 50 years ago. There have been revisions and additional books have been published more recently by various authors. The cleanse has also been expanded and explored further so you have more insight into what is going on with your body while you’re on it, and how to make sure you get the best results for your efforts. Here is the most comprehensive book on the Master Cleanse that we’ve found.

3. It involves fasting.
This cleanse relies heavily on you not eating anything while on it, and only using the lemon mix as your source of sustenance. Stopping the influx of food is designed to give your digestive system a rest, and drinking the lemon with the cayenne pepper is supposed to help stimulate your body into purging out toxins and other built-up waste. The maple syrup is said to give your body enough nourishment, but many health experts say that this is not nearly enough to sustain the human body for days at a time.

4. You should buy premium ingredients.
Since you’re only going to be consuming a limited number of ingredients, it’s important to make sure that you are getting nothing but the best, right down to organic lemons for the lemon juice. Unless you have a premium filtration system, you should also consider buying the water you’ll be using for the lemonade. You want to make sure that your body doesn’t have to contend with any added containments or chemicals, so be very selective about what you use while on it.

5. There’s not a ton of support from the medical community.
There aren’t many doctors that get behind this cleanse as a legitimate way to detox the body or cleanse it of any impurities. The overall feeling regarding fasting as a way to lose weight is that it can be dangerous when stretched out to several days as is recommended by the official version of the cleanse. In fact, most medical experts recommend against doing this cleanse, and point out many potentially risky factors involved.

6. It’s often written off as a fad diet.
If you’re looking for a diet that you can adopt as your lifestyle for the long term, this isn’t it. What many people do is use it as a wedge between their old self and the one they’d like to create. Many times when you begin a diet old habits and cravings can keep you from maintaining it. By cleansing the body, breaking your ties with food, and helping to get old body waste out of your system, it can be a way to prepare yourself for a new diet plan and a new way of living.

7. It takes a leap of faith.
Since there’s no large body of scientific evidence that this cleanse works, you have to feel it in your gut and resonate with it, and pretty much have faith that you’re doing a good thing for your body. Basically, you just have to try it because there are pretty much an equal number of people saying that it works for them, and others that say it didn’t. There are also those that have never tried it, but are making calculations as to the effect it is having on your body.

8. You should gradually go on and come off of it.
Not properly starting and stopping the Master Cleanse is the biggest problem most people have. It’s important to not approach this “cold” by just stopping eating and starting an influx of lemonade. Spend time acclimating your body to the idea of what’s to come. You also don’t want to just stop the cleanse and jump right back into eating solid foods like sandwiches and cheeseburgers.

9. It doesn’t involve an exercise regimen.
You aren’t required to do any specific exercises on this cleanse, which makes it attractive to those that either don’t want to, or can’t perform cardio or weight lifting activities. You won’t be getting enough calories to warrant doing anything extra while on it, and you should practice conserving your energy even though you might feel more energetic than you normally do. You can practice meditating or do some very light yoga to help keep the body in motion.

10. It can be customized to your desired length of time.
Even though the recommended time to be on the cleanse is ten days, it is not a hard and fast requirement. You can play with this number as you see fit, and as your confidence grows you can increase the number of days that you go on it, eventually building up to ten. It’s important to always feel good about what you’re doing, so don’t push yourself past your limits and take this process slowly and deliberately.

11. You can buy pre-made kits if you can’t buy the ingredients.
If you are in a remote location or don’t feel like assembling your own ingredients, you can buy pre-packaged kits that include everything you’ll need, from the water to the lemon juice and syrup, to the laxative sea and salt for the salt water flush. These are usually moderately priced, and are just a little more expensive than if you got them all yourself.

12. There’s no hidden ulterior motive.
Some diets and cleanses are merely the front end, while on the back end they’re hoping to get you to buy their additional books, tapes, pre-packaged foods, and specialty items. One refreshing feature of the Master Cleanse is that it is what it is, and there isn’t a lot of proprietary goods that are under lock and key. You can go and buy all of the items you’ll need for it from your local grocery store, and start on it right away without being forced to by a particular supplement.

13. Celebrities use it.
This may or may not sway your decision, based on your feelings towards celebrities. The most recent attention the cleanse got was from Beyonce when she used it to slim down for Dreamgirls. Many times celebrities can put a diet or detox program on the map by just mentioning it to the tabloids. This will either get you more excited about trying it, or turn you off of the idea since it’s become something of a fad.

Should You or Shouldn’t You?

In the end, you’ll have to make up your own mind whether to give this a go. As long as you avoid the major pitfalls that can lead to lousy results it seems to be a reliable way to clean out your digestive system. At the same time there are other routes to the same goal without going to such extremes. Be sure to consult with your doctor before starting this or any other cleansing program. They’ll have an understanding of your medical history and may be able to advise you on better options.

Master Cleanse FAQ

Can the Master Cleanse get rid of candida?

Not likely. There are specific cleanses for candida and the Master Cleanse does not resemble them in any way. You’ll still be taking in sugar with the maple syrup that is in the lemonade mix, and the cayenne pepper is not a strong enough agent to kill off candida. If you are concerned about your candida levels and are looking to do a candida cleanse, it’s best to find a program that is especially for candida.

Does the Master Cleanse clean your liver?

Your liver is attempting to cleanse and repair itself at all times. If you stop doing things that are detrimental to your liver, it gives it a chance to heal and rid itself of impurities. The Master Cleanse gives the liver a break from items like alcohol, caffeine, processed sugars, processed foods, and artificial ingredients. At the same time it’s getting citric acid from the lemon juice, and thermogenic cayenne spices. These can act as a way to help the liver do its thing and be more effective. Whether you need to go to such extremes and stay on a cleanse for so many days is debatable.

Is the Master Cleanse a fad diet?

The first thing to remember is that it’s not a diet. It’s a cleanse, so it can’t really be thought of as a fad diet because no one is claiming that this should be looked at as a way to alter your intake of foods in order to lose weight. It can be considered a fad because there are some big name celebrities that have been on it and gotten results. It can also be considered a fad because it’s using unorthodox and unusual means to get your body to respond.

How Does the Master Cleanse lemonade work?

The lemonade is really the crux to the whole cleanse. It’s a simple enough concoction, just water, lemon juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper. The lemon juice is meant to have a cleansing effect. The syrup is there to sustain you since you won’t be eating any food, and the cayenne pepper is said to be able to stimulate your internal organs so that they can function at more optimal levels. All combined, these are supposed to cause the magic to happen, leading to the positive feedback the cleanse gets.

Can you do the Master Cleanse for X days?

One of the biggest questions regarding the cleanse is whether it’s OK to do it for a specific amount of days, ranging anywhere from one to 40 or more. The official book that started it all says that you can do it for up to 40 days, and ten  is recommended as the norm. But ten days can seem like an eternity when you’re not eating any food, and there’s no pressing reason why you couldn’t start off with any number that sounds reasonable to you, working your way up to the ten days over a series of cleanses.

Does the Master Cleanse get rid of acne?

The Master Cleanse is billed as being able to rid you of many ills, acne being one of them. The idea is that since you are cleansing the body as a whole all problems should improve, especially those related to the skin. But we’d recommend that you don’t set your expectations too high on this one, and don’t take the cleanse just to see if your acne improves.

Does the Master Cleanse get rid of belly fat?

You might notice that your belly doesn’t protrude as much as it used to after you’ve completed several days of the cleanse and have been using the laxative tea regularly. This is a natural byproduct of emptying out the digestive system. Many think they have lost belly fat when this happens, but that is not necessarily the case.

Does the Master Cleanse get rid of cellulite?

There is no evidence that the Master Cleanse is effective at eliminating cellulite. Some cleanses claim that they have a direct effect on cellulite, but there is no particular reason why this would work for it. The symptoms and results are similar to what you get on a starvation diet, and that has not been shown to reduce cellulite.

Can you do the Master Cleanse without cayenne pepper?

The cayenne pepper is presented as a major reason for why the cleanse works. Since there are very few components to this cleanse, it’s important to make sure to include all of the ingredients and follow it to the letter. You’d likely get fewer results without the pepper.

How much Does the Master Cleanse cost?

The nice thing about the Master Cleanse is that it’s not really for sale. You can buy books for it, but there’s nothing to buy except for the ingredients which can be had for a modest price at your local supermarket. Keep in mind that you won’t be eating regular food while you’re on it, so it will likely end up saving you money by not having to feed yourself for ten days.

Can you do the Master Cleanse without syrup?

The syrup is what is claimed as giving you the nutrients you need to sustain yourself over the ten day period. You wouldn’t want to take that out or you’re basically on a total starvation diet and not getting anything at all in the way of calories.

Is the Master Cleanse a hoax?

No, it’s not a hoax and was presented as a bona fide way to cleanse the body back in the 40’s. The author of the book gave his theory as to why the cleanse would work, and how it would work, and it was meant to be taken seriously. In current times people are using it in a gimmicky sort of way to fit into wedding dresses or prepare for movie roles, and the instructions have been passed around as email spam, which is why it sounds like a made up hoax.

Is the Master Cleanse hard to do?

Some say that it is difficult to do, while others say it’s hard at first and then gets easier. It really depends largely on the individual and how much experience they have with fasting, and detoxing, and cleanses, and their belief level on whether it will be easy for them or not.

Does the Master Cleanse give you diarrhea?

Loose stools are part of the program because you’re taking a laxative tea but not introducing food to the body on a daily basis. This means you will have a bowel movement but there won’t be much inside you to move, which can lead to both diarrhea, and feelings of constipation.

Does the Master Cleanse give you energy?

One of the side effects of not eating is an initial surge of energy. This is because you’re not being weighed down by food, and you’re getting sugar from the maple syrup in the lemonade. Even though you may feel more energetic, it’s important to conserve that energy since you’re not getting enough calories each day and you’ll need that energy to get through your day.

Will the Master Cleanse get rid of parasites?

There is no evidence that the Master Cleanse gets rid of parasites, as there are only two components that might be able to, the lemon juice and the cayenne pepper. Most parasites can handle these two ingredients without much trouble. You should look for cleanses that are targeting parasites in order to make sure that you are covering a broad range of organisms and getting them all out while establishing good intestinal bacteria.

Is the Master Cleanse safe for kids?

The Master Cleanse is not recommended for children.

Does the Master Cleanse give you headaches?

One of the reported symptoms of the Master Cleanse is headaches. This is to be expected as you’ll be tampering greatly with the amount of food you’re eating, or not eating in this case. The lemonade is supposed to help with these sort of symptoms, so make sure that you are consuming enough of it at the suggested times.

Does the Master Cleanse mess up your metabolism?

If you conduct the cleanse the right way, gradually entering and exiting it, there shouldn’t be any harm done to your metabolism. It should slow while you’re on the cleanse, because you’re basically fasting. But once you resume to eating whole foods again it will speed back up. It’s not as if your metabolism gets wrecked permanently by temporary changes to your diet.

Does the Master Cleanse taste good?

The combination of the lemon juice and maple syrup basically results in a lemonade flavor. It’s the addition of the cayenne pepper that will cause some people to say that it doesn’t taste good, and others to say that it does. The pepper provides more of a spicy aftertaste when used in the recommended amounts. It’s not like you have to plug your nose to get it down. It’s more of a sweet and spicy mix that stings the throat a bit at the end.

Is the Master Cleanse safe while pregnant or breastfeeding?

The Master Cleanse is not recommended during these times, as your baby needs to be nourished both during and after pregnancy. Once you are finished breastfeeding you might consider the cleanse to help with getting rid of the baby weight.

Is the Master Cleanse starving yourself?

You are basically starving yourself, and the syrup is designed to help curb the symptoms that usually accompany a starvation diet.

Will the Master Cleanse help me quit smoking?

Not likely. The Master Cleanse is not targeted towards detoxing nicotine from the body. There are specific nicotine cleanses that you can do in order to have a higher chance at successfully eradicating it from your system.

Will the Master Cleanse work if i eat?

No. The major cause of all the effects of the cleanse is that you’re not eating regular food. Drinking lemonade on top of eating a regular diet is not going to get you the sort of benefits that not eating would.

Is the Master Cleanse supposed to be spicy?

The lemonade is spicy thanks to the cayenne pepper. This can be adjusted to taste, but try to use the recommended amount of cayenne pepper, as this is a big part of why the author says it works.

What is the Master Cleanse diet recipe?

One serving: 10 ounces filtered water, one tenth of a tsp. of cayenne pepper, 2 tbsps of organic grade B maple syrup, 2 tbsps organic lemon juice. Mix it all up and drink it down. You can make enough to get you through the day, but it’s not recommended to make multiple days in a row all in one batch.

When does the Master Cleanse start working?

On the first day of drinking only the lemonade and not eating any food, most people say that they feel lighter and have more energy. This is because you’ve stopped the flow of food into your body, so you really are now emptier, and your body has been focusing on the food you’ve already eaten, and getting that out of your system.

Can i do the master cleanse without drinking the laxative tea?

    • jazz

No. You must use the laxative to produce a bowel movememt. It is very important that you dont skip out on this step. You will not be eating any solid food do you will need the laxative to produce a bowel movement to rid your body of left over waste.

    • CheetahOBX

Jazz…”No.”……..This response is incorrect. The correct answer is ……YES. I have completed the MC multiple times and NEVER done so with the aid of any kind of laxatives. I use the original recipe and use the SWF(Salt Water Flushing) every morning on an “empty” stomach. The recipe calls for 32 fl. oz. of PURE water(I use spring water) and 1-2 teaspoons or 1 table spoon of “sea salt”….NO….not iodized salt!!! You mix this and chug it down…..wait by a restroom for up to an hour…..and waalaa!!! You “cleanse” happens!!!
Note: I have just finished my Summer MC and completed 21 days straight…..piece of cake!!! Good Luck!!!

      • Xhosa

        HI CheetaOBX

How much weight did you lose in 21days? And seeing that it’s not August and you did the cleanse in June, did you gain any of it back?

For diabetics, organic blackstrap molasses is recommended!

    • sam

Doing any strict diet like this is NOT safefor a diabetic. Diabtics should eat many small and healthful meals throughout the day to help regulate glucose levels and avoid spikes and crashes. With a condition as serious as diabetes I would reccomend consulting your doctor before starting ANY new diet to determine if it is safe for you

I am 57 years old. I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis when I was 29. Ten years ago, my health really went down. I couldn’t walk anymore, even I was on a really strict diet from the book, which taught me, that I was sensitive to a lot of things and a to lot of food. I’ve learned what to avoid, but I couldn’t walk in grossery store for more then 15 min., because my health was really bad. Then I found a book about the Master Cleans. It was just small, yellow, $6.00 paper back book. Long story short, I went on a cleanse for 10 days first time. Followed everything to a tee. I had horrid headaches for first 3 days, but I didn’t stop. After 10 days I felt wonderful. I started doing it every three month for 20 days each, for three years. 10 years later I do it twice a year for 20 days, and I still follow everything what’s in a book to a tee. I will never be cured, but I can walk 3 miles every day, I function pretty good on my own. I consider it a miracle for me. Our three daughters do cleanse twice a year, for 10 days each. At first they cheated, and they felt nothing from the cleanse. But now they do everything exectly, how book teaches to do it. And they feel grate from the cleanse. Original wrighter of the book said it all correctly. Now many smart alecs are trying to correct the miracle book, and that way they do more harm then good. If it works, why change it? It really works for me and many many people. But nobody knows about us.

Agree with reviewer above. If you are serious about this cleanse, buy the original yellow book for 7 bucks by Stanley Burroughs which you can find anywhere like amazon, ebay, barnes & noble, etc. I am 38 and have been using it once a year for approx 10 years and it’s just amazing how it refreshes my body as I don’t live that perfect healthy lifestyle 365 days a year!

    • Ana Ramirez

I used the lemon cleansing diet, for over 34 years, I did it 20 days the first time… I was doing chemotherapy at the time (malign cancer, I was on my fifth month of chemo)…. I went to my Oncologist Dr., for a check up……He ask me…what is that your are doing different? because your count cells, are very high, and I mentioned him… I doing “the Lemon cleansing Diet”, (the master cleansing diet), I never felt better in my life!!!!! he ask me to please give him a copy of the diet., for himself.. he sad… I only believe it!… because I am seeing your blood test results!
I have dissolve tumors of the size of an egg with this cleansing Diet in all this time because cancer re-appears .. because I don’t leave a healthy lifestyle.

what kind of laxative tea do you recommend? I want to start this I’m only 19 and I’ve never done anything like this before but my diets very poor because I’m constantly on the go do you have any recommendations?

        • Stacey Carbary

You can download the free pdf book. It explains the entire process. The tea is for if your not having bowel movements. I use Smooth Move Tea and don’t have to take it every night. I’ve also gotten out parasites with this cleanse

  • Janette

Can you take asprin if you get a headache? Will it intrude with the cleanse?

  • teli

HELP can i restat the diet cause i ate on day 5 and if i can when sud i restart?

  • Suzette

To the poster above.. you are not suppose to take anything other than presription medication from your doctor. Any OTC, vitamins, supplements should cease during this time.

  • Lightfeather

i would like to know the name of the laxative tea. I know using Epsom salt or Himalayan salt works as a cleansing.

  • Stacey Carbary

You can get the book here for free pdf download. I’ve been on it, have lots of energy and I have most definitely gotten out parasites. Though he recommends salt water flushes I highly recommend and enema with 1 to 2 quarts of salt water every few days. When I do the enemas..out comes the parasites and nasty stuff. All though I am not sure if the cleanse kills candida, I do get a lot of it out when I incorporate the enemas.
For any of you that hate spices like me, I don’t mix it in the drink, I bought veggie gel pill caps and I put the cayenne pepper in those to swollen it down like a pill and not to taste http://www.abholistichealth.com/upload/TheMasterCleanse.pdf

I’m on my 12 day of the master cleanse and I feel amazing mentally, physically and energetically.. no real strong desire for food..(just occassionally the “psychological” connection.. no hunger pains or anything of the sort. My skin looks great, I’ve lost a lot of belly fat and around hips, thighs and butte..(getting very slim and toned).. been exercising as well quite a bit (tennis and yard work, etc), and I have a lot more energy than I did before when I was eating normally. .. Definitely have the candida thing going on with my tongue (still) .. This is my 3rd time doing the cleanse but this is the longest I’ve gone before and I feel so good I want to keep going. .. Just started doing the salt flushes on day 12.. i know I should have started sooner, but it’s still all good. I can only judge the m/c works by how i feel and the results I see .. The Master Cleanse definitely works for me. (O, PS i did cheat a couple times early in the beginning with some brown rice and avacado.. stuff.. and another time with something else and both times i definitely felt how sluggish the food made me feel. it feels sooo good giving the body a break from food. I believe in the m/c for me. The people who don’t like it, i think they are doing something wrong (like low grade maple syrup or something) .. I recommend buying the highest quality stuff. .. anyway, just wanted to share 🙂

I felt a little bloated yesterday too. I am doing the SWF and am successfully alliminating . I no longer crave food, but I go thru a lot of different feeling thru out the day it seems. Anyone feel this way. I woke on today, day four……just not feeling real high on life.

  • KarenA

After my younger brother died last month I decided to go on the MasterCleanse to help me physically cleanse the “sorrow” from my body. I read several articles and knew that weight loss should not be my primary goal. From Day 1-3 I felt aweful; headaches lethargy and of course pseudo- agoraphobia because I was afraid to be more that 10 ft from a bathroom. On day 3 I weighed myself and I had lost 2.5 lbs. I started adding 15 minutes of ab exercises and mat Pilates.
I somehow missed the part about the salt water flush part of it and didn’t start it until day 4. The first salt water flush (2 level teaspoons of non iodized sea salt in one quart of water) was too salty for me and I ended up throwing it up. I now use 1.5 teaspoons and that staysdown. I fell off the wagon on day 9 and had an alcoholic beverage and two thin slices of chicken and half a pretzel ( I was invited to the VIP lounge at an Earth, Wind and Fire concert) and boy did I pay for it the next day. . I decided to add three more days to compensate for my slip and I am now on day 11. Tomorrow (day 12) should be my last day. I have not weighed myself since day 3, but I will tomorrow. I am hoping that there is enough loss to motivate me to start with weights and cardio again.

  • Lady B

I enjoyed reading and got lots of insight from all your posts regarding the MC. Inspired by my daughter, tomorrow we will be taking the “challenge” of a (starting) 7 day cleanse. I told her we can continue to the recommended 10 day once we are off the ground, but want to take it one step at a time b/c although I want to say I’m kind of scared for her – it may just be me. I am excited and nervous all at the same time… But we got this! I guess this is where I MUST model discipline. The pressure is more on me than it is on her… she did all this research and reading that as I refreshed what I knew about the cleanse, she was already aware of. August 19th, look out, cuz here we come!

  • GIGI

hello everyone. I have completed and lost lbs a few yrs ago on the m/c. I am approaching 40 in a couple of months GOD WILLING, and dont wanna face it in the 200s, so I plan to try it once again for the sake of my health and knee issues. can I use a meal replacement/protein powder w/water as a way to add a few extra cal for the purpose of my daily 2mi walk +stair run at the track? and can i also save the laxative flush for wknds only bcuz it doesnt always work in a timely manner in which im guaranteed to be home?

    • Jesse

Just my opinion, but I would lay off the exercise for the time you plan on doing the diet so you don’t need the extra calories, since a major portion of why it heals your body is that you are basically fasting and the body is not having to use any energy digesting food.

I think laxative flushes when they are convenient for you is fine, it is still going to be way better than not at all since it will still help remove waste and toxins. Try to stick to the cleanse as best you can and get a lot of rest (the time when your body does the most healing). When you are done the cleanse, your body will be greatly rejuvenated and you should be able to start introducing an exercise program. Eat a clean diet when you are done the cleanse and you will get to enjoy the benefits from it for a very long time!

      Good luck 🙂

  • Jesse

Number 5 is the biggest reason you should be thinking it is probably legit (assuming you figured out that the medical system is a fraud designed to keep you on life long prescriptions, not to heal you).

The medical community isn’t taught to get on board with things that give your body a chance to heal naturally. They are taught to be legalized drug dealers, take this pill, hide the symptoms while furthering the damage (since the root of the problem isn’t being addressed, just hidden) from toxins building up until you end up with a real problem like cancer. Your body is always trying to talk to you and give you hints when something is wrong. Hiding these messages with prescription drugs is the worst thing you can do.

Teaching people that fasting and juice detoxes can fix your body naturally doesn’t benefit BIG PHARMA and would give control and responsibility of your health to yourself (a responsibility that a lot of people aren’t ready for, they still like the “pill for every ill” approach that our doctors our taught). We are the only ones responsible for our own health. Health problems are not random, they only happen when you are deficient in the vitamins and minerals we need for too long, and/or when the intake of toxins is higher than what the body is capable of eliminating at a time. Other factors like stress levels, sleep, proper hydration and exercise too of course.

It is liberating to learn that our bodies are completely resilient and can overcome the negligence most of us put it through with processed foods, preservatives, alcohol, and other things that have become so common place in our society. The second you decide to cleanse and stick with a clean diet, your body will reward you, just have to stick it out through the detox phase to when the healing can begin!

This is a little bit of a read but it gives great insight to why things like fasting and juice detoxes work, and what to expect if you decide to do a major cleanse for the first time in your life. http://www.primallifeorganics.com/pages/detox-and-adjustment-period

Good luck to anyone thinking of trying this out 🙂

Can I added more lemon juice in to my master cleanser diet ?

I’m on the 11th day of the MC and still waking up w/ headaches during middle of sleeping at night. Is this symptom very common at this stage of the master cleanse??

Hi… I’m doing the master cleanse tomorrow and I’m super nervous. I’ve never fasted in my life and I am afraid that my body won’t know what to do. I get headaches if a don’t have protein and I just get some protein and I’m better, but with the cleanse I won’t be able to do that and I am very nervous. If I am desperate I plan to take some Tylenol but I am going to try not to. I am starting tomorrow and I couldn’t sleep because I was kind of nervous. Wish me luck!????

I wouldn’t recommend doing the master cleanse for 40 days, even though it does say so in the book. Fasting for that long can cause some very serious health problems. I’ve written about this in my article on the dangers of the lemonade diet here: http://www.lemonadewise.com/diet/dangers/

The Master cleanse that I know of uses grade B maple syrup. The reason being is because it has the right minerals. And another reason why you should only use distilled water. The minerals in tap water or regular water go against the lemon. Sorry be careful my friend. I have noticed however that some companies have made there grade B into grade A. Not sure what they did or if it is the same. Perhaps someone else does and can explain. Best Wishes

I did the MC clean for 27 days the first of the year. I would have gone 40 days, but my daughter insisted that I eat. I felt great and I still feel good. However, I want to start it again so I can lose more weight. I lost 20 pounds, and need to lose another 15 to be where I need to be with my height. So, I’ve decided to start the MC again today. I hope it will as successful this time as it were before. We will see!

Whenever my mother did this cleanse she would make the lemonade without cayenne pepper, and then she would take a cayenne pepper suppliment. The results were still the same, and the drink tastes a lot better.

My husband is type 2 diabetic and with diabetes comes gout (or at least for him). He’s one of those that used to drink diet sodas every day and a lot of rice. The past 2 years we invested into a plant based product line and he’s made some drastic improvements! Yet, while on travel last month he ate somewhere and woke up to a gout attack. He’s been almost too scared to really eat anything so he decided to do the MC (which he hasn’t done in about 4 years). Well, he’s doing great! His foot has really settled down. The best since he’s gotten the attack. Yay! He did try to use 2 supplements that are geared towards gut health (candida), but he broke out in a rash (common die off symptom) and I read not to add supplements during MC. So once he’s done with MC we will target gut health…AND the best news is he’s agreed to stop eating nitrated bacon and sausage!!! This is another huge step especially for a Hawaiian. Blessings to all.

I’m sorry but some of the comments on this board are insane!!! You people NEED to follow the program to a tee and stop tinkering with it. I am very concerned with the lack of understanding a lot of people posting on here have about the interconnection of each part of the cleanse. I suppose Stanley forgot one key ingredient to mention, and that’s will-power. Ratios are important or he would have used words such as “dash” or “pinch”. So here’s the logic… THINK… Lemons for nutrients and alkalinity, Cayenne for stimulating, Grade B Maple Syrup for nutrients and energy, Saltwater flush for toxicity and waste removal (FROM DAY 1!!!, NOT DAY 11), Herbal Laxative for breaking up waste and removal. THERE!!! All of these work together so stop meddling with the program. I’ve done this cleanse 3 times now for 21 days each time with amazing results because I didn’t falter nor did I deviate from Mr. Burroughs teachings. Rheumatoid Arthritis is a Bitch, but the Master Cleanser sure knows how to punish her.

I have a question I’m doing 30days detoxing now, if you do 10day detox you do 5days introducing food back into your body, but how many days do I do introducing food back in my body for the 30day detox? I can’t get no hell anywhere

Is it ok to do more than 2 weeks or should I only stick to the two weeks for the first time doing the cleanse?
